How does one introduce a company that had revenue of $327 billion in 2013?  Simple, Samsung have been one of the main global cornerstones of technology since their emergence onto the market all the way back in 1938.  With products ranging from TVs, hard drives, SSDs, microwaves and even fridge freezers, they have many fingers in many different pies on the current market.  Obviously we aren’t here to discuss microwaves but more the PC component side of things today.

On the test bench today is one of Samsung’s latest storage solutions, namely the 850 Pro SSD which follows on from the previous 840 range of SSDs; this included the 840 basic, 840 EVO and the 840 Pro, which this particular drive is a direct replacement for.  With its 10 year limited warranty, fast and reliable speeds and of course being available in numerous capacities (128GB/256GB/512GB/1TB), there seems to be an option to suit everyone’s needs.  The main question is though, how well will it do in comparison to the 840 EVO; does Samsung have any surprises up its sleeve?  I intend to find out, but first let’s see what Samsung have to say…

What Samsung have to say about the Samsung 850 Pro SSD:

The Samsung SSD 850 PRO is a brand new successor of Samsung’s premium SSD product 840 PRO. The 850 PRO is powered by Samsung’s own cutting-edge 32 layer 3D V-NAND technology, which delivers up to two times the density and write speed when compared with traditional 20 nm planar NAND flash.  Last year, Samsung mass-produced 24 layer 3D V-NAND product for datacenter which has been already proved by market. In this time, Samsung suggest the world 1st V-NAND SSD for client PCs.  By changing to a 32-layer cylindrical cell structure, more cells can be stacked vertically, resulting in a smaller footprint and higher density. Thus, 850 PRO delivers blazing-fast speeds – the fastest on the market – and the most endurance to ensure it won’t let down when users need it the most.
