Intel has recently announced that their IDF 2017 event will be canceled, this is a slightly strange move from Intel although no doubt one that has been well planned out.

Intel released the following statement regarding the event.

“Intel has evolved its event portfolio and decided to retire the IDF program moving forward. Thank you for nearly 20 great years with the Intel Developer Forum!

Intel has a number of resources available on intel.com, including a Resource and Design Center with documentation, software, and tools for designers, engineers, and developers. As always, our customers, partners, and developers should reach out to their Intel representative with questions.”

So there is it, after a 20-year long run IDF will be no more. In recent times IDF has been used to release the latest Intel CPU architectures with both Kaby Lake and Sky Lake being released at their prospective IDF events.

However, Intel has been progressing more and more into markets beyond CPU manufacturing and as such Intel may have decided that a single event was just too restrictive for them. Having multiple events throughout the year should mean much more focused events. So although the loss of IDF is significant it should lead the way for Intel to producing some rather exciting events in the future.
