Finally, hot news off the press and AMD have finally announced their new B550 chipset motherboards. “The new B550 chipset for socket AM4 is the latest addition to the AMD 500 Series chipset family with support for the industry-leading AMD Ryzen 3000 Series desktop processors. The upcoming B550 motherboards are the only mainstream modern chipset with compatibility for PCIe® 4.0, unlocking twice the bandwidth of B450 motherboards for high-speed, high-power performance in gaming and multitasking.” – AMD

Now, speculation. With a rumoured June 16th date pencilled in, X570 finally has its little brother on the scene. With zero-argument about how affordable and popular B450 chipset motherboards are there’s no doubt that B550 boards will fly off the shelves with support, we presume, for current 3000 and upcoming 4000 series AMD CPUs at a more cost-effective, but limited, option over X570.

Lots of speculative information being shared around the internet at the moment but it looks like:

  1. B550 is to bring PCIe 4.0 M.2 support via four PCIe 4.0 lanes directly attached to the CPU. However, the interlink between the chipset and CPU is running over four Gen 3.0 lanes making the B550 chipset more familiar to X470.
  2. Support for two USB3.2 Gen 2 devices only.
  3. Six USB 2.0 ports.
  4. 4+4 SATA 3.0 connections.

As it stands, comparing B550 to X570 it’s clear that it loses out with fewer USB3.2 Gen 2 ports, it will not support  PCIe 4.0 GPUs from the chipset and utilises a PCIe 3.0 interlink vs PCIe 4.0 the X570 has limiting bandwidth. Presuming this is where the PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD support will come from.

We’re looking forward to seeing more concrete specifications in the near future.
