Sony has just released the first 4K UHD media player, and with a price tag of $699.99 it’s certainly not a cheap product.

In unison with the release of the media player Sony have also announced content delivery system for 4K titles ranging all the way from TV to Movies including favourites such as Spider Man and Total Recall. The pricing for both rentals and download is $7.99 and $29.99 respectively.

As for the device itself, it comes equipped with:

  • SD Card Slot
  • 2TB Internal HDD
  • 1 x USB 3.0 Port
  • 1 x USB 2.0 Port
  • HDMI
  • Gigabit Ethernet

This marks the beginning of the shift in power from 1080P content to 4K UHD, only time will tell how quickly the transition will take as 1080P BluRay has still yet to overpower DVD.

One worrying thing is that on the listed specification it only mentions support of Sony 4K TVs, now we don’t know if this is hollow words until people get them in their hands it’s a worrying start that these may be brand exclusive.

Sony is offering a $200 discount promotion to all owners of a Sony X900A 4K Ultra HD TV.
