Conclusion

So what does play3r think of the Goodmans Canvas portable radio? Well, actually we couldn’t find anything we didn’t like about the product, for ÂŁ30 we’re incredibly impressed. For testing audio products we tweak our criteria depending on the product, usually it revolves around the audio quality combined with the main function of the product.

Audio Quality

Obviously the first thing we are looking for is the quality of audio, getting crisp and clear audio is something that we consider to be very important. The Goodmans Canvas produces great audio quality for the price of the product, when compared to other portable speakers you can buy the quality is much higher at the same price. The only problem I noticed was higher into the volume range with some slight distortion. However that is to be expected from a product of this value. Given the size of the product the volume is quite loud and it will please those looking for something to have at work, or perhaps in the kitchen, put simply it will please the majority of people.

DAB & FM Quality

So what is the functionality of the product? For a digital DAB and FM radio finding radio stations is important. For the test location we used a location in which signal was barely achievable using a phone, and the Canvas managed to find most of the popular stations in digital and FM, the audio was clear and didn’t suffer from loss of signal. We also tested the quality on internal batteries to see if the reception was still as clear with no problems whatsoever.

Aesthetics

The looks of the product are worth a note because the Goodmans Canvas looks gorgeous and comes in a variety of designs that enable it to blend easily into the background or stand out. Our review sample was the Copper model, but you can buy the Canvas in Apple Green and Slate, please note the copper and slate are a brushed metal finish. The simplicity of the product was something else that should be noted, buttons that work, nothing fancy. I also have to give credit to the simple LCD panel that showed the radio stations, it quite simply worked and I actually favour the simplistic design over complicated touch screen displays, because at the end of the day this a radio not a spaceship.

Portability

The product does claim to be a portable digital radio, but I think it has a long way to go regarding true portability. But this is because I prefer a more modern approach to products, I would have liked to see perhaps a 4800mAh or larger internal battery to match the output of 4 AA batteries. This would save the user money in the long run without having to buy new batteries, although it does come with a higher premium on the product.

Would we buy?

Overall the Goodmans Canvas is a fantastic product, it sounds amazing and does everything it says on the box. There are so many digital dab radios around at the time of review, but the Goodmans Canvas stands itself apart with a gorgeous design and the ability to take it out and about using batteries. My only dislike to the product is regarding the portability, because it uses 4 * AA batteries you’ll find these being replaced every other day. and it would have been nice to have an internal battery, even if this added a slight premium to the product.

Bottom line – Great audio, amazing reception, great price.
