Setup

Setting the Lavi D headphones up was very easy, between a sensible device broadcast ID and the useful light on the ear cup that flashes when the headphones are in pairing mode setting up the headphones up was a doddle.

Audio Quality

Due to the type of headphones they are and the fact they are sporting 40mm drivers, I’ll be honest and say I wasn’t expecting an awful lot from the Lavi Ds when it comes to sound quality. Happily though I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality they put out, nothing mind blowing of course but they are pretty well balanced with a good amount of clarity in the mid tones and adequate highs all topped off with a satisfying bass response all things considered.

The main thing to be looking at with wireless headphones like this is if they can provide decent enough volume to drown out the background noise of the train/bus but without annoying those around you too much. The Lavi D does quite a good job in both respects there with a nice middle ground between sound leakage and a decent listening volume to drown out your surroundings.

Whilst the audio quality is nothing spectacular, I’d say it’s perfectly good for on the go listening and really to have anything like good audio quality in such a lightweight design is a respectable achievement. What the Lavi Ds need more than anything else to improve audio quality is to have bigger ear cups in my opinion, a better acoustic seal on the head should get a bit more punch out of the drivers and make the listening experience even better.

Range

For the range LUXA 2 have simply quoted the bog standard Bluetooth 4.0 10m which is always a safe bet, although it’s a bit of a cop-out if you ask me. In my range testing the LAVI Ds did perform in line with most other Bluetooth 4.0 devices I have tested with strong line of sight performance that quickly tails off with some hard cover between the headphones and the source. I experienced no problems with the wireless range of these headphones, given my expectations for Bluetooth audio devices at least.

Call Quality

Being a Bluetooth device we of course have scope for a phone call functionality with the addition of a microphone which is exactly what LUXA 2 have done here. I never expect a lot from such solutions and truth be told there was nothing to write home about when it comes to call quality, the person I was calling sounded great but they did say I sounded quite muffled; the only way to get around this is to talk unnaturally loudly which doesn’t help when it already looks like you’re talking to yourself anyway!

At the end of the day it does the job though and that’s all I ask from phone call functionality on Bluetooth audio devices so I’ve got nothing to moan about here!

Battery Life

Last but not least we have battery life and given what I’ve seen before with LUXA 2 products they are always very good on battery life and live up nicely to their claims. The spec for the LAVI Ds is an impressive ‘up to’ 16 hours and in my testing I did average out at just a little bit over 15 hours of playback at a mixture of high and medium volumes so I am very impressed with the battery life, more than enough to get you through a day or even longer depending on your listening habits!
