Testing & Performance
It’s obvious from a first glance that the DDJ-RX 4 channel mixer is superb; many functions, features and knobs to play around with, but looks only tell one side of the story. Performance and quality are Pioneer DJ’s main aims and it’s of no surprise that some of the world’s top DJ’s swear loyalty to the brand. With that being said, I’m not one of the world’s top, nor am I considered “good”, but I do know some stuff and I am hoping that the DDJ-RX coupled with Rekordbox can help me overcome my fear of mixing!
Below is a video of a little DJ session/mix I made with the Pioneer DJ to show off how easy the unit is to use; of course some of the more complex features require skill, but here is the basic premise of mixing and beat matching.
One of the key components of this unit is how it easily flows alongside the Rekordbox DJ software and well, it’s designed specifically for use with it. Although I have used Serato DJ a couple of times in the past, the Rekordbox DJ software is pretty comprehensive and features an easy to use interface. Touching more on the performance of the actual mixer, the jog wheels are very low latency and I had no problems when doing my live mix, nor did I have any issues with any delays on the tone knobs, crossfader or the play/pause buttons. These are paramount to DJ’s as you don’t always get a second spare when it comes to accuracy and nailing the pin point cues is one of the keys to producing a good and entertaining sound.
After using the Pioneer DDJ-RX DJ mixer for around 2 weeks solidly, not only do I feel more confident in mixing, but it actually turned my opinion on the digital age of mixers as opposed to the old skool vinyl deck setups; something which I never thought possible until now…
