Closer Look

The SteelSeries H Wireless comes in a quite large and serious box. Although the review sample has got a bashed in corner, there is no damage on the inside of the packaging so it has done its job well.

In the bottom right corner we get pointed in the direction of the H’s highlight I mentioned in the intro. A strong wireless performance and continuous charge.

The rear of the box is an expansion on the features pointed out from the above picture. We also get an accessory checklist – everything is here to get connected to console, PC and (probably) any other audio device.

Slip off the outer sleeve and take off the top layer and we’re greeted with H and control box.

The H itself is circumaural – meaning the cups go around your ears – which means that there should not only be a strong seal for audio purposes, but also, circumaural headphones tend to be comfier than headphones that sit on-ear.

SteelSeries haven’t cheated out on comfort for the headband either. The individual cushions can handle a lot of depression and they aren’t too hard.

The cups themselves depart from the matte black scheme the rest of the H headset has.  SteelSeries have chosen to go with the pull out microphone present in their other headset such as a the 5H v3 – a smart and functional touch.

SteelSeries have kept the branding to a minimum and none of their logos are detracting at all. On the whole, the headset itself leaves a clinical impression worthy of a premium product.

There isn’t much wiggle room in terms of how far the earcups extend in, although the liberal cushioning around the ear cups makes it look smaller than it is.

Twist the right earcups glossy panel off and below it is the battery pack.

The control pod itself appears to have taken it’s design queues from Apple and looks quite nice – complete with a white LED display. Certainly, I wouldn’t have thought this was from a peripheral maker typically aimed at the gaming market.

When one battery runs flat you swap it out and slide it in the slot on the right – truly play and charge.

The H Wireless supports nearly every audio device imaginable via the control box. There is USB, optical and analog connectors with Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding supported to boot.

SteelSeries have definitely started off on the right foot in terms of aesthetics and apparent functionality, but how does this transfer into actual usage? Turn over to find out!
