Conclusion

Well, I have had plenty of time to get to grips with the HD5W and all in all it seems like a good camera. Let’s have a quick recap to see exactly how I felt about it.

The Performance of the HD5W was quite nice as expected. It is capable of recording 1080P videos at 30FPS, or, 720P at 60FPS. Coupled with a 12MP photo sensor and it is a serious contender in the action camera market. During my testing, everything went smooth though I will say the number one thing to make sure you have when using an action camera, is, a memory card that will keep up with the recording of the camera. If your SD card is not up to the task, you will be left with laggy videos and you may want to try and blame the camera when in fact it is not. Overall I was quite impressed, especially with the photos it takes and while it does take in quite a bit of light, this is expected as it does have a 170° wide angle lens.

The video quality was rather good itself though I would have loved to of seen 1080P video at 60FPS. However, I do understand this was not feasible and would have severely added on to the price of the camera. When recording in 1080P everything seemed fluid, even when putting the camera underwater and taking it back out, there was no real lag. However, depending on the speed of what you are recording, you may want to bump it down to 720P so you can make use of the 60FPS feature. 720P may lose a bit of quality, but it really should not be too much as to put users off.

When looking at the Design the HD5W is right on point. It has a simple and very basic design and interface to it which makes it the perfect companion for any family outing. After a couple minutes of playing with the HD5W, most users should be able to have a good grasp on how to operate it with ease. The small and compact design of it also allows it to be put in a waterproof casing without becoming overly large which is a good point for any action camera. Lots of the time, users will want to kind of stash their action cam out of the way and the smaller size of the HD5W means even with any of the mounting hardware, this will be easy as can be.

In terms of Value, the HD5W comes in just short of £100 which is a great value. Not only are you getting an amazing action camera, you are also getting a nice amount of mounting accessories to see you through most situations with ease. The quality of the HD5W is also well worth the price and when it says 1080P, it means it and that is good enough for me.  Let us also not forget the 12MP for those times you only need a still photo and not a camera, the HD5W has you covered.

When it comes down to it, the HD5W is a well-rounded action camera that offers good performance and doesn’t go over the top with features the average users will not make use of. If you are considering getting a new action camera the HD5W should definitely be on your list of ones to consider if you are looking in the £100 price range.
