Conclusion

Sometimes you get what you pay for when you buy ANY product, some are good value for money and others not so much. I feel the Phillips 272G5DYEB has an element from both scenarios. Firstly, £341.90 for a 1080p monitor might seem like an extortionate amount of money to drop, but given the 144Hz refresh rate, NVIDIA G-Sync support and of course fantastic colour reproduction usually found on IPS screens, it sort of makes the entire argument moot.

Of course it’s still expensive, but this is 27” of pure visual gaming performance and although not IPS, don’t let that put you off as IPS monitors generally have cack refresh rates, poor response time and are usually considerably more than what a TN panel (like this one) might cost.

It’s clear that Phillips have made the 272G5DYEB with the focus of targeting gamers; that’s exactly what this monitor is, a gaming monitor. With that being said, 1080p isn’t mind altering, but a single GPU can generally hit the needed 144fps mark for the matching refresh rate and that’s the huge kicker here; you need a capable graphics card to run your games at 144fps or more to make the most of it. Of course MOBA’s such as League of Legends will run those frame rates on a mediocre card, but Battlefield 4 or GTA V, not so much.

If you are in the market for a new monitor and intend to continue with the 1080p resolution, then this monitor is sure to tickle your fancy and although relatively expensive, prices have dropped since launch. G-sync is a nice feature and although it only caters to NVIDIA graphics cards, this has to be taken into consideration when purchasing. For £342 however, I do feel it performs well enough to justify the price and in terms of colour gamut, it rocks my socks.

The Phillips 272G5DYEB is a definite purchase for the 1080p gamer looking to improve their gaming experience.
