[section_title title=”Closer Look – External”]Closer Look External

Taking an overall look at the Newton R3 800w power supply, this particular model as previously mentioned is the black one but it is also available in white for all those people wanting to match their PSU with a white case.  The outer casing of the power supply features the Fractal Design logo on the side with an 800w Newton logo towards the cable inputs.  The casing itself has really sleek edges while rounding them off to eliminate straight edges.  This looks good in my opinion and the black body with white font contrasts really well in my opinion.

The Newton R3 is 16.5cm long and 15cm wide meaning that this should fit in most cases on the market, those that are M-ATX/ATX onwards at least.  Although it isn’t the biggest power supply on the market, it isn’t the smallest either.

Taking a closer look at the side, the Fractal Design logo is rather large and could be considered intrusive but I really like the look of it and feel it works very well.

Taking a look at the back of the Newton R3, we have the back grill and the connection to the 240v mains.  It does include a built in transformer and what that means for you is it will automatically switch power input from European to say American if you decided to travel and take the PSU or your system with you.  The rear grill has a honeycomb mesh and you can quite clearly see some of the inner components.

On the top of the Newton R3 (the side that doesn’t expel air) has the Fractal Design snowflake embossed into the outer casing.  This is a fantastic touch but I can imagine a select few people who would have preferred plain but I don’t feel it ruins the look; it only defines the top in my opinion and really stands out.

On the flip side, we have the ventilation grill which features a 135mm fan which is semi-passive.  What this means is it will only fire up when loaded ensuring the operating temperature stays below the maximum (50c) and is also better for the environment.  The fan blades themselves are white and again, I really like the black and white contrast of the Newton R3.

Here is an internal view of the aforementioned fan in the Newton R3.

Finally we have the pre-attached cables of the Newton R3 800w power supply which include the 24pin motherboard power and 4 x 4+2 pin PCI-E power cables.  The majority of the power cables have yellow and black plastic sleeve with a black plastic braid.  I personally think this type of braiding feels cheap but you could braid it yourself if you had the skill/time for that extra personal touch.
