Ballistix Tactical Tracer RGB DDR4 Review

Recently, Micron sent over a 16GB kit of their all-new Tactical Tracer RGB DDR4 RAM for me to review. Not only a review, but I’ve done a video overview including a demonstration of its RGB capabilities below; please do go give that a watch for the closer look part.

Another nice addition to the software package is that it also works seamlessly with the likes of Asus Aura, MSI Mystic Light, Gigabyte AORUS Graphics Engine and many other “popular” LED-controlling software. Other inclusions include a RAM temperature panel with the ability to load a temperature widget on the desktop with optional transparency should you choose to do so.

Ballistix Tactical Tracer RGB 16GB DDR4-2666 RAM Review: The Verdict

It seems as though Micron tend to opt for Samsung memory ICs in their faster kits, while the Tactical Tracer RGB DDR4-2666 kit we have in our possession uses Micron D9TZV ICs. These do offer decent performance but don’t quite have the frequency yields as Samsung ICs and even Hynix. That said, at lower frequencies, the D9TZV operate optimally and Micron are still one of the big dogs in the memory world.

What’s hot:

  • Looks good when illuminated
  • Available in different colours and frequencies
  • Reasonably priced
  • ‘Competitive’ performance

What’s not:

  • Not blisteringly fast
  • Our testing showed slower than normal memory copy speeds

The Micron Ballistix Tactical Tracer RGB DDR4 Ram kits are available in 8 and 16GB kits and are available in 2 and 4 stick kits. They also come in 2 frequency ranges of 2666 and 3000MHz. The 2666MHz version is 1.2v and the 3000MHz version is 1.35v and finally, the kits all come with a 16-18-18 latency.

Overall the Ballistix Tactical Tracer RGB DDR4-2666 performs decently albeit with slower than normal memory copy speeds; the flip side is higher than normal memory read speeds. If you’re looking for a subtle looking kit of RGB DDR4, the Tactical Tracer is certainly fit for purpose. I would like to award it with our Silver award for competitive performance and a decent looking design thanks to the RGB LED bars.
