It was revealed earlier this year that another BlackBerry 7 powered device was due to hit later in the year. CrackBerry have uncovered a few technical specifications and its rumored name the “BlackBerry 9720”, which is suspected to be a Curve model however that is still possible to change in the future, so don’t keep your hopes up!

Specifications

  • Full QWERTY keyboard.
  • Display resolution is 480×360
  • Runs BlackBerry OS 7.1
  • Wireless & Network: 802.11b / 802.11g / 802.11n / 3G

It will be nice to see another updated BlackBerry on the market but truly I find it hard to even see the phones as a competitor to both iPhone and Android. BlackBerry are very robust and excellent for enterprise work but their alternative have been getting better in that regard very well.

One big problem is the version it’s running. You would expect the company to be running the latest version of its OS, which is BlackBerry 10, yet this device will release on BlackBerry 7. Is it intended as a crippled device for users use as a gateway to BlackBerry? Either way I don’t think it’s smart to segregate your user base on purpose, Android is having problems with it and BlackBerry certainly have the power to keep it under wraps like Apple have.

Overall as much as it’s good to see new devices being released I feel like BlackBerry really need to switch things up a bit – Hopefully the next iteration of their OS and devices will release and be a real competitor to iPhone and Android and be a real contender on the market for both new and existing buyers.
