Blizzard Entertainment’s newest title in the making, Overwatch, is turning many heads. With its cartoon style graphics and FPS basics covered, and from the makers of the decade-strong MMO series World of Warcraft, it looks like a pick’n’mix premade hit. Whether or not that proves to be the case though remains to be seen. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, take a look at the game’s flashy promo video below.
One thing that can be seen right now is the game. and not just by the chosen few. The Overwatch Beta is open for everyone who wants to take a look at Blizzard’s ‘player vs player’ FPS arena game, kind of like a cartoon CS:GO or Dirty Bomb. Select your character role from Offence, Defence, Tank or Support before choosing from up to six characters in that role. With a total of 21 characters available it should encourage a bit of variety.
With your role and character chosen, next comes the map, and again there’s plenty of variety here depending on if you want a straight arena battle or an escort quest or something in between. Each map is again in cartoon style but based on real world locations so you could be battling in London, Hollywood, Nepal or Gibraltar to name just a few of the twelve locations.
The scenery looks beautiful, as do the character animations, as they should when you have as much experience as Blizzard. This could still be their first flop as they break out into the FPS genre but with multiple game modes, loot and progression there seems to be plenty to keep us interested.
If you are interested in taking part in the Overwatch open beta event then time is ticking, as it’s only available until the 9th of May. Head along to https://playoverwatch.com/en-us/game/ and join in, you don’t even need to sign up. That’s your weekend sorted, eh? Ours too!
