In the first quarter of 2023 going from my recent hardware testing on games I would say 4 cores is still enough as long as you have hyperthreading. On a non hyperthreaded CPU you will want 6 cores especially if you want to do any sort of streaming or screen capture. Overclocking won’t make up for the lack of threads, games such as Fortnite will lack smoothness and see lower 1% and 0.1% lows with only 4 threads. I’ve recently tested an overclocked 4670K at 4.5ghz against a stock clocked i7 4770K extensively. For video editing with a GTX1070 the i5 could handle 6 video tracks at 1080p and a single audio track before there were frame drops in the preview and scrubbing suffered. The i7 could handle 8 video tracks. In GPU bound benches the 2 CPU’s swap places and the i5 will hit higher frame rates with the v sync off but the gaming experience is nearly always that bit better with the i7.
