It’s a sad time for the internet hosting era, popular sites like Rapidshare seem to be disappearing everyday. I remember using Rapidshare back a long time ago before commercial hosting got better, and I think part of the reason sites like these are dying? Well it’s down to data being cheaper, everyone seems to have a free data plan. You can even get unlimited photo storage with Amazon prime.
Probably the last thing that kept these sites going was Piracy, but I fear the Dotcom case might have pushed Rapidshare to shut its doors early. I did read a while back they attempted some automatic copyright policies to remove pirated content. But regardless it’s pretty hard hitting as rapidshare has been around since before I can remember!
On their website you can see a notice:
Kindly note that RapidShare will stop the active service on March 31st, 2015. Extensions of STANDARD PLUS and PREMIUM will be possible until February 28th, 2015.
We strongly recommend all customers to secure their data. After March 31st, 2015 all accounts will no longer be accessible and will be deleted automatically.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send us an e-mail to
Rest in peace rapidshare!
