In 1993 a movie was made based on the legendary Super Mario Bros. The movie, whilst amazing for all the wrong reasons, was a commercial flop. Despite the fact that Sony has made countless bad decisions when it comes to movies, they are moving ahead with the decision to make a brand new Mario movie.

We know that Hollywood and Mario don’t mix but apparently Sony pictures don’t care about that. They are currently very close to agreeing a deal with Nintendo that could see our little plumber back on the big screen. An email leaked during the recent Sony Pictures hack suggests that the documents are all but signed.

The emails show that Avi Arad (producer of The Amazing Spider-man, The Incredible Hulk, Ghost Rider, X-Men) is currently building up a gaming movie empire. Arad is currently developing movies based on infamous, Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid and Uncharted is now also adding Mario to that list. The president of animation in Sony Pictures Michelle Raimo Kouyate received a package from Arad himself packed full of Mario merchandise. She replied with “I can think of 3-4 movies right out of the gate on this. So huge!”

Arad has now confirmed publicly that negotiations are under way but far from finished. What might have proved a stumbling block is the fact that Sony is asking for Nintendo’s permission to use Mario in their movies, but this doesn’t seem to the case. In fact they seem keen to be able to get Mario out into the movie world once again.

What do you think of bringing games into the movie scene? Does Mario belong on the big screen?
