Performance
When taking a look at mechanical keyboards it comes down to an individual user preference over which type of switch is best for them. Previously I had been using Cherry Blacks as I am a bit heavy handed. The POSEIDON Z comes with either Brown or Blue Kailh swithes, for this review I had the Blue variant. I personally feel they are nice and responsive and I for one like the noise they make when typing, especially at faster speeds.
Gaming
When it comes to gaming I test all peripherals on the same games! I am an FPS player and I believe the selection of games I play and test on should be a good indication of how well the peripheral on review will handle most any situation. For my testing I took a fair amount of time enjoying Quake Live, Battlefield4 and CS:GO. While they may all be FPS games they offer a very different pace and style of gameplay.
Quake Live is the game I use to test out response times as this is the fastest pace game I play. Jumping right into a match of Clan Arena I was off and running. The keys responded instantly when pressed as we would have hoped. Rocket Jumping while turning side to side was done with ease and the tactile feel of the keys helped improve my response time as I did not have to press them as hard as what I was used to.
Battlefield 4 is the game I used for all around testing as it can have it’s fast moments in the heat of battle, or it can slow right down when approaching an enemy from around a corner. The POSIEDON Z held it’s own again. The N-Key Rollover proved most useful especially when in flying vehicles. I am a novice when it comes to flying in BF4 and more times than not I am hitting 5-6 keys at once trying not to crash into something, the POSEIDON Z did not let me down!
CS:GOÂ is a bit slower paced than the above games and is a good way to measure a peripherals response time as it is critical to get the first shot fired and get the edge on any enemy or sidestep a bit to miss an incoming shot! Every millisecond counts and the POSEIDON Z was there at the ready whether crouching or jumping.
General
General testing is a combined test of normal day to day activities such as web browsing, word processing, photo editing and all of those types of things. I have been using the POSEIDON Z for a few weeks now and used it to type this whole review and I love the feel of the Blue Kailh switch it uses. I am finding it great to type on and it is amazing for things like photo editing. I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts when using Photoshop and everything just seems to be in about the perfect position so as to allow everything to flow nice. From hitting Ctrl-C/V/S to Page UP/Down to even using the function keys. I know a lot of people complain and moan about having to hit the FN key with one hand then hitting on of the F keys to get the media functions but I am fine with this and again, it all seems to just flow very nicely.
Touching on the comfort of the POSEIDON Z real quickly and I can not fault it one bit. Typing on it is great and the lower actuation of the switches should help reduce fatique. Also, it may just be me but the keys seem a bit closer together than those on the CM Storm Trigger I am used to using so it seems to have added a few words per minute to my typing time, a nice touch and something that is always more than welcome.
