Conclusion

My time testing the Venom Warrior has come to an end, and sadly this is not the keyboard for me. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with it, but the clicky keys are not my cup of tea. Also, since I’d never used a mechanical keyboard before this review and I was always led to believe I was missing out on something amazing, but although the typing experience is a little different to what I’d been used to it wasn’t really game-changing.

The Warrior is really well put together, and I think very stylish too. The palm rest is incredibly comfortable and feels great against your hands. The backlighting has been implemented perfectly as long as you don’t need to read the letters printed on the keys in the dark. That matt black metal fascia works well from a style viewpoint; it’s built for endurance, adding a lot of weight, but also rigidity which should help give the Warrior many years of use which is good since the keys are created to withstand 58 million keystrokes.

Adding redundancy for the volume controls, when really the dial switch in the corner is sufficient, seems to me to be a mistake since there are other functions included that would benefit from better control. Four macro buttons, each with just 20 keystrokes maximum, is a bit limited even though they are simple enough to program that a toddler could probably use them.

I think my lasting impression after using the Venom Warrior as well as from the included materials though will be that it’s trying too hard to be everything, it’s mechanical attributes are more or less glossed over instead of being the main selling point for this segment of the market.

With all said and done, though, I feel that Venom has got a lot of things right with their first attempt and from a value perspective you can’t beat £55 for a mechanical keyboard, but since there’s limited information about these switches I’m not sure there will be many early adopters from the established enthusiast community. Time will tell if this will be Venom’s breakthrough product in the crowded PC market going against more established players, but I’m happy to bestow the Warrior with our Bronze Award for a good effort with more things right than wrong.

Play3r FAQ

Q. What switches are used with the Venom Warrior? Are they Cherry or Kaihl?
A. Venom have gone with an in-house design with liquid silicon internals.

Q. Are different switches available on the Venom Warrior or just the clicky one?
A. Sorry, but at this stage we simply don’t know.

Q. Are the Venom Warrior keycaps replaceable?
A. These seem to have the same mounts as you would find on a Cherry board, but without having those caps to hand I can’t confirm anything at this point.

Q. What colours are available for the Venom Warrior?
A. Just Black with red accents at this point.
