[section_title title=”Conclusion”]Conclusion
The Fractal Design Newton R3 800w power supply has been on the test bench for a little while and has been subjected to my testing but how is that 12v rail in terms of efficiency? Is the Platinum 80 Plus rating a testament to Fractal Designs quality ethic or does it just fall short?
Starting off with the main reason someone would ultimately choose a power supply, the performance and as I could see from my testing, the Newton R3 performs well within the recommended guidelines set by ATX themselves. Not only that but it seemed to perform slightly better with a full load placed upon the single 12v rail. The astonishing thing was the amount of fluctuations on the rails during load; they never spiked and seemed to have rock solid voltage stability. The actual OEM of the Newton R3 is a company called ATNG who also provide units for companies such as Cooler Master and Rosewill and although unknown to me prior to testing the Newton R3, clearly is a force to be reckoned with.
The design of the Newton R3, in particular the black version is that of a smooth but sleek car, with an engine inside that screams quality. The black shell combined with the white font contrasts very nicely and for those looking for a power supply that not only looks good but would fit nicely with many different combinations of cases especially due to the Newton R3 being available in white also.
Price wise, a Fractal Design Newton R3 800w power supply will set you back around £129 and given that it features a semi passive fan, 80 PLUS Platinum rating and is modular, you get really good bang for buck. In comparison an a Corsair AX760i platinum rated PSU will set you back £141 and is pretty much the competition in terms of pricing and spec. Although the Corsair is probably the more popular out of the 2, the big surprise is the Newton R3 comes in 2 different colours, performs exactly how it should do, even with its maximum load and is a good £10-15 cheaper.
Overall the Fractal Design Newton R3 800w power supply ticks all the boxes that you could need in an 800w power PSU, it has a great look, feels good, top quality components are used and performs exactly how a power supply of this calibre should. If you haven’t heard of Fractal Design before now, you should have!
Huge thanks to Fractal Design for sending the sample in for review and I look forward to seeing more in the near future!
