Conclusion
Has much changed since I last reviewed this particular camera? Well, not really, the physical appearance of the camera remains the same; you have the same contents, same design no new features here. The app is where the magic happens: normally I wouldn’t bother revising a particular product, but since I have two HomeMonitor cameras dotted around my home, I thought it would be useful to see what has changed. On a positive note, it is great to see a company continually working on a slightly older product. Typically a company will support it for a year or two at best, but Ycam have stuck with it and produced a vastly improved app.
The design is a hell of a lot better – and it works! The material feel to it is something we are already accustomed to and the layout is what I’d deem “standard”. The UI is much more intuitive and the categorising of the videos and cameras is cleaner, thus easier to use. The additional features such as the location recording are great, although I think it would be fair to say that these should have already been present from the launch.
The app still lacks additional integrations – I’d love to see a IFTTT recipe to create custom alerts as the standard one is fairly basic – a simple vibration and bing – you should be able to have a nice loud alert in case someone is breaking in!
Overall I’d say Ycam have done themselves proud with the new app. It’s miles ahead of the previous version and adds some great functionality. I’ve already awarded the particular camera the gold award, so I don’t think it’s necessary to repeat it in this instance, however I’d happily say it is one of the better cameras I’ve come across to date. Sure the price is still hefty to some, but it comes with seven days worth of storage, of which they can be downloaded at any time. If you’re looking for security which is easy to implement, look no further than the HomeMonitor HDS Indoor security camera.
Thanks for sending it over Ycam!
