Performance and Testing

TEST SETUP

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K @4.5GHz
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61
Motherboard: ASUS Z97-K
RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 2400MHz 8GB (2x4GB)
PSU: Corsair AX760
OS: Windows 7 Premium 64 bit

For testing, we paired the StarTech.com HDD Enclosure up with a 250GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD to help show the full potential it has to offer. As with most storage products, the numbers may differentiate between benchmarks a bit, but as seen below, not that much.

According to the StarTech.com product page for this enclosure, users should see around a 400MB/s read and write when using the device over USB3.0 with UASP support! The results received in the ATTO benchmark I ran where not that far off and rather impressive for an HDD Enclosure as far as I am concerned. Another one of the benefits of UASP that some may not know is the fact it also requires less CPU resources to achieve the faster speeds over standard USB3.0.

The main thing for me here was seeing that the StarTech.com enclosure could utilize around 70-75% of the SSD’s speed. This tells me that when paired with a normal HDD it is just about guaranteed to be able to transfer files as fast as the HDD with allow, making the HDD the bottleneck and not the enclosure which is very nice to see.
