Conclusion
Now that I have had a thorough look over the StarTech.com USB 3.0 HDD Enclosure, it is time for the best part, the conclusion! Time to find out whether or not it is worth your hard earned money and see just what I thought. So without further ado, let’s get to it!
Performance
I have to say, I was quite impressed with the overall performance of the enclosure. Having a few external HDD caddies lying about, I had yet to come across something that could almost max out the speed of an SSD such as the StarTech.com offering on review here today could. Looking back at the benchmarks, the read and write speeds were both consistent with each other in each of my tests and it topped out around 350MB/s read and write, which, as mentioned, is around 70-75% of the full speed offered by the SSD that was used. As this enclosure is designed for 3.5″ drives, it can only leave one wondering if it is up to the task of maxing out a normal hard drive’s read and writes speeds and the answer is simple, YES!
Design
The enclosure is black in colour and the outer casing is made from aluminium. There is a plastic tray that houses the PCB with its SATA connection which is easily slid out from the outer casing. The overall look of it, and the fact that it comes with a stand, won’t have you feeling that it looks out of place when you see it on your desk. Also, while it does feature some branding on it, this is rather small and really does no harm at all!
Value
When some people see this, they are immediately going to think that it is rather expensive for what it is. However, they may forget it is backed by StarTech.com and features UASP support and will operate at much faster speeds than your standard USB HDD enclosure will. Silver Award – This enclosure is going to walk away with our silver award today as while the performance is great, I just could not hit the speeds given by StarTech.com using it on my Z97 based system.
