Performance
As we’ve mentioned already, One For All are keen to push their mobile app with this particular product. It’s meant to make setup a whole lot easier. Gone are the days where you needed to try entering different codes to pair it with your device. Although saying that, if you are not a smartphone user, then yes you can still pair the device manually using the old fashioned code entry. Because the app is meant to make configuring the device easier, we opted to use it, just to see how well it actually works.
So open up the app for the first time and you’ll see the following screen. To set the remote up to the app, simply click on “Pair Remote”.
You now need to hold and press the Activity and Devices buttons on the control itself for 6 seconds. It took us a few attempts for it to successfully pair but we got there eventually.
Once you’re all paired and ready to do. You can then simply tap the icons on the screen to start configuring the remote to work with your devices. We opted to try and get an LG 50″ Plasma set up first of all. Remember you can have 8 devices programmed simultaneously.
Once you tap the “Add New TV” icon, you’ll then be asked to select a country and brand.
We selected LG, the screen then changes and will ask you to power on the old TV (using the old remote). Once the device is on, simply hit the Device is ON button at the bottom of the screen.
You then get the next screen which asks you to test the power button. Press the button on the app and not on the remote itself. You’ll then be asked whether the device successfully turned off. You may have to repeat this a couple of times until the remote has picked up which model of TV you are using.
Once you are finished you’ll be presented with the next screen which just confirms that the setup process has now been completed. It also gives you the device “code”. Remember what I was saying earlier on about programming the device manually? That option still exists if you need it.
We then proceeded to do the same for our Virgin Media Tivo box. Again this was picked up almost instantly.
Once you’ve added a couple of devices, you’ll start to notice the home screen of the app changes, to reflect which devices you have added so far.
Another cool feature of the app is it features a “Remote Finder”. The remote itself has a small speaker built in, meaning if you do misplace it, simply tap the button and it’ll emit a loud beep from the controller so you can locate it.
Onward to the remote itself; there are another couple of features worth mentioning, one being the activity mode. This allows you to multi task the remote. By this we mean, you could use the remote to control the volume on the tv, whilst using it to change channels on your Set Top Box. Or change channels whilst controlling the music on another device. So you don’t need to keep swapping between device modes manually.
Because initially we just just had the TV and STB setup, it enables the activity mode for these devices automatically. Although if you want to program it yourself, you can view a demonstration video by clicking here which will walk you through the setup process.
Another selling point for this remote (and indeed the app) is that it guarantees to be future proof. So if LG were to bring out a new TV next week, the app would be updated to ensure the remote would work with it. So you don’t have to worry about the remote becoming obsolete.
One final feature we’d like to highlight is the remote’s ability to learn buttons from another remote control. So as an example if your soundbar remote had a button which is linked to a unique feature that the smart controller hasn’t recognised, you can program a button on the smart control to learn what pressing that button does and it can then perform that action itself.
