I’ve had enough experience with CPU coolers not to put much stock in the size of the box when it comes to the size of the cooler contained within, nor how well it will work just by basing performance on size alone. Sometimes, CPU coolers are just a bit misleading at first glance. So when I received this box from Scythe I tried to hold back all expectations even though the box is pretty massive, after all, with foam and bubble wrap it might be – and probably would be – a lot smaller than it first appears. Nope! Minimal but effective protective packaging, a pre-fitted 140mm fan and simple fittings mean that the Grand Kama Cross 3 is almost as big as the box and easily the most massive air cooler I’ve come across.

For a Japanese company the sheer size of this cooler was a shock to my preconceptions about micro-manufacturing from Tokyo and the surrounding provinces, but time will tell whether or not size really is everything and if Scythe can take the crown from EU designers of the likes of Noctua and Cryorig among others.

With a design reminiscent of a V-6 engine loaded with a massive turbocharger on top, can the third revision of the Grand Kama Cross turn looks into raw performance? Chassis compatibility is something we’re going to have to put to the test here as well as raw cooling power, how does such a large cooler fit among the rest of the components in a crowded case?
