Now that I have had my hands on the Archos 40 Titanium smartphone, what is my overall impression of it?  How does it compare in terms of performance to its more expensive counterpart (the Archos 50 Platinum)?  Is it a strong contender at a very reasonable price point?  Let’s find out…

Starting off with the performance, the 40 Titanium offers very reasonable performance for its current price point which is a huge plus for the company that seems to go a great job with budget handsets.  It offers slightly better overall battery performance than the 50 Platinum we previously reviewed from Archos and also beats it in Vellamo HTML5 benchmark as well as the Point of View Mobii 1325 tablet.  This is impressive for a smartphone at literally half the cost of the 50 Platinum and a tablet of the Mobii’s calibre shouldn’t be beaten by any smartphone other than the powerhouses like the iPhone etc.  In 3DMark Ice Storm however the gap in graphical performance is clearly noted and shows its weakness compared to the other devices we have recently tested.

In terms of usability, I wasn’t blown away with the 800×420 resolution of the 40 Titanium but for what I would call a budget phone, it is more than acceptable and the screen is very responsive.  It is worth mentioning that for those with large hands/fingers, you might struggle to use the standard keyboard as I found that trying to press certain letters would press the one next to it.  This caused a headache during texting and sending messages on Skype but with those people with nimble fingers should find no fault with this phone.  The menu navigation is also typical of Android, easy, clear and straight to the point.

Talking about the aesthetics, I really do like the phones design, it has the charging port and headphone jack at the top which works really well and the overall design of the phone does really look good.  I really like the general look of the phone, it isn’t cluttered nor is it bare.  For a phone costing under £150, it might not have all the bells and whistles of an iPhone or S4, but it does the job superbly well.

Touching more on the price, for £119.99, I honestly don’t think you could find a better-rounded phone for the money.  I have seen more well-known brands of Android smartphones with lesser specs cost a considerable amount more so where Archos isn’t a major name, certainly makes up with its incredible value.

Overall if you are looking for a budget smartphone and want it to be android, then look no further than the Archos 40 Titanium.  It has plenty of features ranging from a 5MP camera to dual sim, which is fantastic if you are like me and have more than 1 sim card in use!  This phone would also make a suitable purchase for your teenager who desires a trendy looking phone, but not a bank breaking balance of say an iPhone or other similar smartphone.

Thanks to Archos for sending in the 40 Titanium and I look forward to seeing more in the near future.

Summary

The Archos 40 Titanium provides truly amazing value at £119.99 and is a strong representation of how seriously you need to take Archos as a smartphone maker. With features for higher end smartphones packed into the 40 Titanium, if you are looking for a low cost alternative without sacrificing too much of a performance hit, then the Archos 40 Titanium is the perfect solution!
