Corsair VOID USB Dolby 7.1 RGB Review

The Corsair VOID USB 7.1 Dolby RGB gaming headset offers practically the same as the analogue version, but with some very big guns incorporated!  The first one is of course Dolby 7.1 support which features large 50mm neodymium drivers for that little bit of extra oomph in the bass department.  This is also designed to give crystal clear audio which essentially equates to clarity and the refinement of each of the 3 major tonal points; bass, mid-range and treble.  The other is the highly sought after RGB support which is featured in the VOID’s top 2 models, the USB (this one) and the wireless version.  This offers users a higher level of visual customisability and with 16.8 million colours to choose from, it can only be a good thing!  When coupled with other Corsair RGB products, you can use the Corsair CUE control software to sync them up; this is great and you are no longer limited to companies like Razer for this kind of functionality and comprehensive compatibility with RGB.

The USB version doesn’t differ too much over the Stereo edition with the main frame and overall design focus being an all-black design, but instead of a solid yellow Corsair logo, the VOID USB has RGB function; 16.8 million colours #FTW.  Also in view is the microphone mute button which all of the Corsair VOID range does have included.

Unlike the Stereo version, the USB variation has a smaller well placed Corsair logo across the left side of the head band; this looks nice and subtle, but I can’t quite help preferring the larger one; mainly for showing off that you have a Corsair headset of course!

Corsair VOID USB 3

Like any good reliable and great quality headset, you want to experience comfort while playing the most enduring of games; I have gone for 6 hours straight on League of Legends without stopping before so comfort is a super huge important factor.  Well Corsair has fully padded out the head band and ear cups for maximum and efficient gameplay.  The longer your ears are comfy, the longer you can play un-interrupted, but we do recommend taking a break every couple of hours anyway to allow your eyeballs to rehydrate!

All the Corsair VOID headsets have inbuilt audio controls and feature a switch which allows to increase or decrease the volume.  Also featured is a mute microphone button, but the USB version has a red LED light which indicates whether or not the mic is active or muted.  The only flaw in this I found was when wearing the headset, seeing if the notification light was on or off was near impossible the way I felt most comfortable with the headset; maybe something Corsair could improve on for next time!

Performance

With its oversized 50mm neodymium drivers, it was obvious that the bass was going to be good, but I was surprised at how responsive the bass was on the VOID USB version; a lot better than I had anticipated and it made listening to drum and bass a bit more fulfilling than it was on analogue etc.  Even with heavy rock, the guitars sounded good and I could even distinguish the difference between ambient instruments such as triangles and cow bells; something which some of the muddier sounding headsets fail at, but I won’t be naming any names!  Good bass riffs were noticeable too, especially in the song Inme – Underdose which on other headsets, just hasn’t sounded as good; is Corsair emerging as one of the more dominant peripheral brands?  I think so…

Even the microphone quality was good although still not “incredibly great”, it certainly passes the grade and I think this area is somewhere Corsair Gaming could capitalise on improving etc.

I think the above speaks volumes about how the gaming audio sounds; for the price, fantastic!  The large drivers coupled with the Corsair CUE software’s (Corsair Utility Engine) different pre-sets made my experience so much better.  Not to mention the Dolby 7.1 support which did make a difference in games like Battlefield 4, CS: GO and even made it interesting on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain; a game where pro audio makes for a much easier time picking out enemies due to positional audio.

Now it’s time to take a look at the top model in the range, the Corsair VOID Wireless Dolby 7.1 RGB…
