Wireless peripherals haven’t really been given much credit over the years as many have cringed at the thought of a wireless gaming headsets; I have had wireless gaming mice die in the middle of WoW raids, competitive CS:GO sessions etc. and it can be a pain.  Well the Corsair VOID Wireless Dolby 7.1 RGB gaming headset is here to try and sway my opinion on wireless gaming headsets with its 50mm neodymium drivers, superbly specified 2.4GHz wireless with an impressive range of up to 40ft; of course walls are going to reduce this and multiple walls even more so!  Add the rated 16hr battery life on the headset and you are set for some epic, wire free gaming sessions.

Like every other VOID headset in the range, the VOID Wireless is the only one to give such a capability; the all-black theme with RGB customisation is available and also features true Dolby 7.1 virtual surround.  On the left ear cup or as I like to call it, the control cup, we have an on and off button with a jingly beeping notification (when you are wearing them) to sound as if it’s being switched on, or being switched off.  Also featured is a mute microphone button which is handy if you have a hysterical partner coming in shouting, but you are on your TeamSpeak with your “guys/gals”…there is nothing worse than a VOIP domestic occurring!

The headband and ear cups are padded lushly which gives great comfort; everyone’s ears and head shape are different, that is why the headband is actually adjustable.

Just like the other VOID headsets, the left ear cup also houses a volume control switch which allows you to adjust the volume to comfort.  The Wireless one however has a slot for a micro USB cable (same as most Samsung mobile chargers) which allows for charging the headset.  It’s worth noting even when plugged in, you still need the wireless receiver which is also USB, to be plugged into the PC/MAC you are using.

Here we have the USB cable and dongle required to operate the Corsair VOID Wireless and these feature a yellow and black design.  There is a special edition model available which also features the headset in black and yellow which looks very good, but has exactly the same technical design as this one on test today.  The wireless system used is 2.4GHz and is designed with an operating range of up to 40ft; depending on walls/layout of course.

Here is just one of the 16.8 million different colour combinations available with the Corsair VOID USB/Wireless Dolby 7.1 Gaming Headsets; a nice lighter than light sky blue!  To do this however, you will need the Corsair CUE (control utility engine) which is available for download via the Corsair Support page, but this is well documented within the instructions etc.

Performance

For a wireless gaming headset, the Corsair VOID Wireless Dolby 7.1 RGB is a real tough cookie as it has so many plus points.  First of all, the battery in the headset itself performs brilliantly and I got 2 days of music/gaming out of it before I had to re-charge.  When I say 2 days, I am talking at least 6-8hrs use a day with multiple uses such as listening to music, gaming and of course working!

Although usually considered to have slightly flawed and tinny audio, the Corsair VOID Wireless crushes that premise as I have experienced nothing but great sound quality; in games, music and even TV shows.  The bass is responsive during music/gaming, superb for a wireless headset.  In the week or so I have been using the VOID Wireless, I haven’t had any disconnects which some wireless headsets in the past have been problematic with, so it’s nice to see a great gaming grade wireless headset which gives comfort, performance and of course peace of mind.  Not to mention Corsairs legendary RMA support if a problem ever arose!

My highlight was of course gameplay with Battlefield 4 providing copious amounts of noise such as explosions, bangs, splat (from falling off of high things like a noob) and gunfire!  The virtual Dolby 7.1 acts brilliantly too and with the Corsair CUE software, you can play around with the pre-sets and EQ giving a more immersive and custom experience to all.
