Centapede hit momo

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight has rather simple controls, and personally I would highly recommend playing it with a controller, especially if you have an old school SNES controller for your PC (it has just enough buttons and it feels true to the spirit of the game). The game is very much like a 2D Souls game, you have active items you can activate and cycle through and a dodge roll (which can be used to roll through attacks). Of course there are differences here, there is only one attack button (the other is ranged, which can be charged) and the button configuration is a bit different.

Your health is sort of low when you first start the game and it really feels like everything does a little too much damage, but eventually by gaining abilities and health the damage seems to even out to a point where it feels like a good challenge. You can’t quite autopilot, but you aren’t getting one hit killed left and right.

Where this game truly shines is in its boss fights. As a fan of the Souls games (can you tell I like the Dark Souls series?) boss fights are really important to me feeling like I’ve accomplished something in a game. Momodora bosses are very pattern based, and in order to win you need to memorize their moves and learn how to dodge each of their attacks. For the most part they are really well announced in their own way but there are a few sneaky ones here and there. Most of the boss fights are rather interesting and manage to be quite different from the other bosses.

Story wise the game is quite solid, and it gives you a little story without bashing you over the head with it. It’s also worth mentioning here that there are two endings, which was a pleasant surprise.
