To give the Scuf Gaming Hybrid controller a good session, I picked games that are both console and PC friendly such as FIFA 14 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.  Although the Scuf Hybrid isn’t only designed for FPS games, like their specific FPS controller it has features such as the trigger stops and 4 paddles which should give me an edge on the competition.

Starting out with one of my favourite controller based games (FIFA 14), the first thing I noticed when I took a proper hold of the Scuf Hybrid was the fantastic grip on the back which is in fact hard to make out in the images.  It has a soft comforting feel but at the same time, the grip is hard and robust meaning it shouldn’t wear away.  Aside from this, the Hybrid is essentially a supercharged Xbox 360 controller.  In terms of trigger usage, this was less important and although it was handy with the stoppers, it didn’t have much effect (if any) on gameplay.  One thing that was interesting was the use of the paddles instead of the buttons allowing me to be more immersive into the game without having to move hand positions too much.  It did take a little time to get used to which buttons the paddles represent but as I have previously mentioned, you can configure this when purchasing.  Overall while playing FIFA 14; I can’t say it had much influence over how I played although it did make it super comfortable to play with while using the paddles, even if it was awkward for a while.

Next I decided to have a blast on Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 which in my opinion is an obvious choice for gamers looking to purchase a controller like this.  Although it is dubbed as a “Hybrid” controller, it certainly has more than enough aspects to make it useful for FPS games.  Once I was in the heat of battle, I was absolutely blown away by the trigger stoppers as this made single/burst shots a lot more acceptable to my style of play and furthermore, I could use the Scuf key to adjust the tension which made it that extra bit special.  The paddles were pretty special also and like I mentioned while playing FIFA 14, I had a more comfortable experience of using the paddles than the other buttons; has this changed the way I play in future?  Although I would not consider myself to be a highly competitive gamer, while using the Scuf Hybrid I felt somewhat “elite” if I can even call it that.  I’m not bad at FPS games by any short of the imagination but I feel the controller made me play a little bit better which I guess in a competition, the difference between a little can be the difference between a win or loss.

In terms of comfort, as I have mentioned while playing both my chosen test games, the Scuf Gaming Hybrid controller is probably the comfiest controller I have ever held and with the sheer amount of grip, there was no way it was going to slide out of my hands; unless I threw it at the screen for playing badly which would be an abomination as this particular sample is just sublime in the aesthetics department.
